Unlocking the Secret Weapons of Tube Bending Tube bending machines are essential equipment for precisely forming straight tubes into various curved shapes. Although the bending process may appear simple, it heavily relies on the precision tooling set on the tube bender. These tools act as guides, supports, and clamps for the tube, directly determining bending accuracy, surface quality, wall thickness uniformity, and scrap rate. The most common die in Rotary Draw Bending is mainly composed of five core components.Company Saint Machinery, as a manufacturer that has been engaged in the pipe bending industry for many years, also has considerable experience in mold production.Here is  a comprehensive guide by STM Company to tube bender tooling to help you understand this system hidden behind the bending process.1. Main Types and Functions of Tube Bender Tooling The standard tooling set for rotary draw bending includes the following six core components, each with a clear role and working in harmony: (1) Bend Die: The heart of the entire tooling set. It is a disc-shaped die with a grooved radius. The tube is pulled around it to form the bend, directly determining the center line radius and bend angle. Bend dies are often made with interchangeable inserts for easy radius changes. (2) Clamp Die: Mounted adjacent to the Bend Die, it firmly grips the straight section of the tube to prevent slipping or shifting during bending. (3) Pressure Die: It applies continuous pressure to keep the tube tightly against the Bend Die as it advances. In high-end machines, the Pressure Die can also provide a boost force to reduce wall thinning on the outside of the bend. (4) Wiper Die: Installed just beside the Bend Die on the inside of the bend. It acts like a precision scraper, hugging the tube to prevent wrinkling on the inner wall caused by compression. (5) Mandrel: A support inserted inside the tube to prevent collapsing, ovality, or internal wrinkling. (6) Collet:It is mounted at the rear of the tube. It securely clamps and precisely positions the tube using a contracting ring-like mechanism that evenly grips the tube’s outer diameter. In high-automation CNC tube benders, the Collet Die enables fast tube loading/unloading and accurate feeding control, preventing axial slippage or rotational misalignment during bending. It has become an indispensable component in modern precision tube bending. These six tools work together to create a complete “clamp-press-pull-prevent-support-position” system, ensuring the tube maintains its ideal shape during deformation. 2. Common Materials and Selection Criteria Tooling material directly affects durability and cost: (1) Tool Steel: High hardness and wear resistance, suitable for small-to-medium production runs. (2) Alloy Steel: Excellent fatigue resistance, ideal for heavy-duty applications. (3) Carbide or Coated Materials: Longer service life, preferred for high-volume or ultra-precision work. Selection depends on tube material, wall thickness, bend radius, and production volume. Smaller radii and thinner walls demand higher-quality tooling.   Mandrel and Collet:Often made of bronze, special alloys, or chrome-plated/urethane-treated surfaces to minimize friction and scratching on the tube. 3. Practical Tips for Use and Maintenance (1) Installation & Adjustment: The Collet Die must match the tube’s outer diameter precisely — too loose causes slippage, too tight damages the tube. Wiper Die clearance must also be tightly controlled. (2) Lubrication: Apply special bending lubricant to the tube’s inner and outer surfaces and the Mandrel before bending to reduce friction and wear. (3) Daily Maintenance: l Clean iron chips, residual oil, and burrs from all dies after each shift. l Regularly inspect for wear. l Pay special attention to the Collet to avoid deformation. l Apply rust preventive oil for long-term storage and avoid collisions.   Summary: Tube bender tooling may look like simple parts, but they are the true “secret weapons” for achieving high-precision bends. From traditional Bend Die, Clamp Die, Pressure Die, Wiper Die, and Mandrel to the modern Collet , each component plays an irreplaceable role.
